'Friends of Pakistan’ discuss support to Islamabad

ABU DHABI: A group of ‘Friends of Pakistan’ held a meeting in Abu Dhabi on Monday to look into providing financial support for Pakistan in the face of a balance of payments crisis.Pakistani officials attended a "Friends of Pakistan" conference for talks with representatives of 14 countries, including the United States, China, EU countries, Turkey, UAE and Saudi Arabia, following a $7.6 billion IMF emergency loan agreed at the weekend as part of a broader economic rescue plan. The meeting was told about Pakistan's negotiations with the International Monetary Fund, the overall state of the economy.A Pakistani diplomat said that countries represented at the gathering had not come to pledge donations. "This is not a donors' club meeting," said a Pakistani diplomat. "This is for galvanising broader support to Pakistan." Economic support was just one of the issues discussed, in addition to building institutions, supporting Pakistan's democratic government and battling extremism. "Pakistan played a very important role in fighting terror that needs to be supported," he said.
